CLIMATE CHANGE STRIKE - 24TH MAY 2019

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have had a rising interest over the course of today in Year 10 girls who have expressed a desire to go on the Climate Change Strike tomorrow. having considered the matter carefully, and taken advice from the local Police and Authority, any absence that takes place is an unauthorised absence. The reason for this matter is due to my concerns for the safety of your daughter in the light of correspondence that has been brought to my attention by Greater Manchester Police.  Please see the extract below:

'A further Youth Strike/ Extinction Rebellion protest has been advertised on social media for Friday 24th May in Manchester City Centre (12.00 -17.00 hrs) . GMP have established an operational command for the event to ensure it is peaceful and orderly. Because the organisers have stated their intention to walk in the highway there is the likelihood of disruption and consequently GMP may have to use powers of arrest. As the Youth Strike movement seeks to attract young people, GMP and the City Council are keen that young people are not exposed to unnecessary risk and are asking schools and colleges to take appropriate steps to address safeguarding responsibilities with regard to young people.'

Furthermore, may I remind you that DfE guidance makes it clear that term time leave can only be granted to pupils in exceptional circumstances. Therefore, if your daughter is absent on Friday to attend the protest, then you are accepting a risk to her safety and this will be deemed as unauthorised.

We are keen to harness the girls' voice in terms of global environment issues in school and Eco Reps have been working to consider the matter and how we can make improvements.

With kind regards, Mrs Beever
