Committee & Charity

The Sixth Form Committee plays an active role in ensuring that Loreto sustains its ties within the wider community. During the Christmas Term, members of the Sixth Form Committee, along with a class of Year 7’s, went to the Manchester homeless shelter, Cornerstones, to sing carols and share food and clothes which had been collected over the previous months. The Sixth Form is also actively involved in the NSPCC’s Child Voice Appeal, which aims to raise several million pounds nation wide over the next three years.
Every year, the annual ‘Appeal Week’ organised by the Committee raises thousands of pounds for charity. It is an opportunity for the whole Sixth Form to group together to raise money for a good cause, and have some fun in the process.
Highlights of Appeal Week ’09 included the ‘Come fly with me’ Fashion Show, Year 7 Disco, Krispy Kreme sales and the sale of T-shirts dedicated to our foundress, Mary Ward. The money raised went to the local homeless charity, Cornerstones, and to the Loreto Schools in Kolkata, India.
Appeal Week ’09 ended with twenty-two Year 12 girls flying over to Kolkata, India, to spend two weeks with the street children whose lives would be affected by the money raised. Everyone involved would instantly define the trip as life-changing.

“We worked with children who had nothing. No money, no possessions and often, no families. Their situation would have been heartbreaking had these children not had the support provided for them by the Loreto Schools. They saw themselves as lucky, saw everyday as a gift and were the happiest children you could ever meet. Spending two weeks in Kolkata opened my eyes, opened my mind and made me realise just how fortunate I am. It was an experience I’ll never forget.”
