Career Guidance in Loreto Sixth Form

Career guidance in Sixth Form is delivered largely through our Tutorial Programme and through our transitional WOW!! , our Working Onwards Week between Years 12 and 13 The Tutorial Programme is ongoing throughout Years 12 and 13 and devotes a form period every other week to pressing issues relevant to Sixth Form students.

Year 12

In the course of the Year 12 Tutorial programme we cover amongst other things student aptitude, whereby all girls take the Centigrade Questionnaire to provide an individual profile of possible university courses and careers. Submission to an external body for a full report is optional. Students are introduced to the different types of Higher Education establishments and courses available in Britain today. This is carried out by staff and external speakers. Students visit the GMEX Careers Convention in Manchester.

Progression rates to higher education are consistently excellent

Ofsted

Individual advice sessions can be arranged with our Connexions Advisor, Mrs J. Baker. Those interested in applying to Oxbridge attend the Oxbridge Convention at Haydock Park. Joint Oxbridge information sessions are held with local schools and in June/July students make a residential visit to the Oxford Open Days. Oxbridge preparation begins in school towards the end of the summer term. All students have the opportunity to attend Manchester University’s Pure Potential course in preparation for university application.

Year 13

In the course of the Year 13 Tutorial Programme we hold a series of UCAS Workshops to assist students in the processing of their Personal Statements and online applications. Preparation for Oxbridge continues, and support for the BMAT and LNAT is offered.

I know that my daughter received excellent support from both subject teachers and form/year group tutors

Parents’ Questionnaire 2008/2009

Where relevant, practice interview sessions are provided both in school and in conjunction with a local grammar school. Former students are invited into school to share their experiences of higher education. Guides to Independent Living form the focus of the later Tutorial Programme sessions, focussing amongst other issues on student finance and managing money.

WOW!!10

WOW!! 10: Working Onwards Week. This runs from 21st -25th June 2010 and is a week off-timetable devoted to post-18 plans. It aims to help students choose their courses and universities, complete their online application to UCAS, write their Personal Statement, construct a CV, visit a campus and a traditional University, investigate student finance and prepare for the student–led annual Charity Appeal.

It is evident that the teachers care about your future and want you to do well.

Student ALIS Questionnaire 2009

There is an Information Evening for parents and Year 12 students on Monday 28th June 2010 at 7.00pm in the School Hall. The guest speaker is Mr Roger Gould, Chief Admissions officer for the University of Lancaster who visits our school regularly. Staff will also outline our UCAS application process and former students will share their university experiences.
